Let's start with what deserves most of the blame: the TikTok Shop. The emphasis on Shop content has two bad effects. AdvertisementThe first is the simple fact that I'm being shown lots more low-quality videos that I'm not actually interested in. Tiktok / ScreenshotIt used to be that TikTok would try to convince me I had undiagnosed ADHD; now, it just insists I want to buy Halara brand pants. Reels is still way worse than TikTok: The content is awful and the algorithm is stupider.

WASHINGTON — I co-starred with Sir Alec Guinness in a movie where a submersible travels down to the Titanic, springs a leak and implodes. One scene was shot in the newsroom of The Washington Star, where I worked. It was cool to do because my father had a ticket for the Titanic when he was a teenager. His mother cried so much, he sold it to a young woman. “Raise the Titanic” pops up on Turner Classic Movies sometimes, along with other sagas like the 1953 “Titanic” with Barbara Stanwyck and Clifton Webb, the 1958 “A Night to Remember” and James Cameron’s epic 1997 “Titanic” with Jack and Rose clinging to that notorious wooden door.

On Monday morning, the federal government took over a third failing bank — this time, First Republic. Jeanna Smialek, an economy correspondent for The Times, discusses whether we are at the end of the banking crisis or the start of a new phase of financial pain.
The US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits up to $250,000 per person, per account, using a fund that banks pay into. “I don’t think that’s served us well.”Some argue the US deposit insurance limit should be 100 times higher. What is deposit insurance? Deposit insurance is aimed at calming fears, giving customers less reason to pull their cash out in a hurry. The debate over deposit insurance taps into bigger questions about the state’s role in private enterprise.

Biologists, anthropologists, and information theorists do think that social networks, like Musk's bird app, show at least some signs of being flocks. "Elon's tweet is basically espousing the invisible hand of social behavior," Bak-Coleman says. In this construction, a social network might have become a collective superintelligence, had capitalists left it to its — our? Under Musk, Twitter has entered the dance-off phase. I'll be sad if the Twitter superintelligence starts singing a Kubrickian cover of "Daisy" and implodes into a pile of melting isolinear chips.
Elon Musk, the world's richest person, plans to charge people $8 to be verified on Twitter. But putting a pricetag on the blue checkmark completely misses the point. Musk doesn't appear to realize the irony of his tweet, nor does he seem to understand the point of verification. It's not just about having a blue checkmark next to your name. That's the exact opposite of what the verification system should be striving for.

Silicon Valley, perhaps even more than the rest of corporate America, has long been engaged in a two-sided battle over the pursuit of happiness. In the Silicon Valley that emerges on Blind, the engineers who strive for work-life balance are just as burned out as the late-night grinders. But Silicon Valley has always overindexed for Optimizers. If this is Silicon Valley today, nobody's happy, and everybody's burnt. Stereotypically, Silicon Valley engineers are grinders.
